Before the Sh** Hits the Fan...

Sponsored by

The economy stinks.  Finding a good job is nearly impossible.  The Stock Market is iffy.  Feeding my family can be a struggle.  Gas prices are killing me.  I need to be prepared for the worst.

Do you identify with any of these?

Seems that our world slowly crumbles around us every day and things get tougher.  What would you do if you couldn't run down to the grocery store and pick up food for dinner?  Where would you turn?

OK, now that I have your attention and you're probably severely depressed, let's talk about being prepared to feed our families in the most dire of situations.  Gardening is an incredible way to save money, eat healthy and prepare for a food disaster as well as a wonderful creative outlet.  To help us in our gardening endeavors,  SHTF Garden is the place to be.  From the absolute novice garden to those growing lush acres of produce, SHTF Garden can help with advice, planning and money saving tips.

This is what the creator of SHTF Garden has to say:
  • is two things: it's a website and book-in-progress about gardening when your and your family's lives literally depend on it.  It's also a new, unique way to publish a book that could potentially change the publishing paradigm as we know it.
  • The publishing plan behind The SHTF Garden is new, unique and exciting.  Rather than have the author write a complete book, after months of toil and labor only to find that there are many more months of marketing to be done, and rather than have readers wait months or years for a book to publish - instead of all of that, allows the author (me) to publish his book as it is written while readers get access to each section as it publishes and at a lower cost, once the book is complete, than would have been paid off the shelf.
It's really a great concept!  We were able to access SHTF Garden as a member and found the soil preparation tips extremely useful.  Our soil is, well, sad.  It's more like rocks than soil.  We were able to use the chapter on soil preparation to diagnose what our soil needs and help our plants be healthier.  There are chapters on growing a fruitful garden in a small space, working with plants indoors in containers (fabulous for apartment dwellers!), all about composting and seedlings.

One of our tomato plants.  The soil is not the best and yep, it's weedy too, but I found comfort at SHTFGarden in not being perfect.  At least we will have fresh tomatoes!

At you can access some parts of the site not available to the general public with a FREE account or you can subscribe to have full access to everything.  Members who sign up for a subscription to today will become honorary Founding Members with a special, very low rate that will never change so long as the account is kept current.  Founding Members get access to special items and “thank you” bonuses that others don’t get.  The special reduced rate for Founders is only $2.99 per month, 75% off the planned future monthly charge for a subscription.

Aaron at SHTFGarden would like to give one of my readers a complimentary 30-day paid membership!  How generous!  Here's how to enter...

Sit-upon Tutorial By Rachel Beyer

As a former Girl Scout, I have lots of fun camp memories. I remember learning to tie knots, set up camp and to cook over the campfire. An essential Girl Scout tradition is making a sit-upon. A sit-upon is a homemade waterproof cushion. They are easy to make and I remember using them every time we did any activity while sitting on the bare ground, which most often was damp or scattered with uncomfortable sticks and pebbles. A sit-upon is great for sitting around the campfire, your backyard, or even a sporting event.  There are lots of ways to make a sit-upon. When I was a Brownie Girl Scout, we made ours from old vinyl tablecloths and foam. But in a pinch, you can use a plastic garbage bag and a stack of old newspapers for padding. To revisit this simple craft project, I decided to use a roll of vintage vinyl wallpaper I found at a thrift store and some foam I bought at my local craft store. Essential Supplies: Waterproof Material (vinyl tablecloth, or other store-bought vinyl or

Fantastic Modern Rugs from and a $25 Giveaway

NOW CLOSED, thanks for entering!! Winter has arrived with a vengeance here! Along with the snow and cold outside are the wonderful things that get tracked indoors. Can you hear the sarcasm? I can nearly hear my poor floors screaming every time my husband drags in ice melt pellets, wet snow and mud. We have tile floors, wood laminate floors and also carpeting. Each one of my flooring types have rugs to help protect them... and as a bonus, rugs are just plain fun! We jokingly call the big 8x5 rug in the living room the "messy mat" because it catches all my husband's crumbs. Now is a great time to invest in new and modern rugs from AllM (part of the CSN Stores network) as it's an inexpensive way to change the entire feel of your home. What better time to change the look in your home than the dreary wintertime! It's like a mood pick-up for your home and family. I could really use some new runners and this one is beautiful: However, I like
