FREE Self Improvement Printable Book for Kids

This is really neat! With the new year almost upon us, many people are setting goals and resolutions. ProgressCards.com has a wonderful free printable book so children can set goals too! Their book helps children identify their strengths and set goals to work on things like stress, sportsmanship, shyness, the environment and more.

I love this! We have always used various charts with my kids over the years and they really do work as well as giving a fun visual reinforcement for the kids. At ProgressCards.com they also have more free samples as well as full sets of cards for purchase.

Old Home Videos

On Christmas afternoon, my younger children had gone to their father's house to celebrate with him. My oldest son and his wife, along with my mom and her husband, came over for dinner. I had roasted a turkey and made yeast rolls and potato salad (very informal). My son and I decided it would be grand fun to watch old home movies so we dug out the old videotapes and found a VCR to watch them. We laughed and laughed and laughed and then laughed some more.

Seriously, our hair in the very early 90's was big. Like Marge Simpson 'do - the Luxor pyramid in Las Vegas - perm gone crazy big. And for some reason our shirts and my glasses were also overly big. And why was everyone wearing colored socks with their oh.so.stylish Birkenstock sandals?

So we chuckled when my oldest son was about 5 and wouldn't get up out of bed on Christmas morning because he insisted that it was too dark outside and wasn't morning. And we laughed so hard we cried when this same son was in a preschool program sitting in the front row pulling his arms into his shirt and seeming to have some sort of issue with his underwear, constantly adjusting it. Good times.

The next morning my husband sent me a text message. He said he was lucky that my first husband got the duck and he got to marry the swan. What? I'm an ugly duck that turned into a swan?! Seriously. Sigh. Men.

On to the New Year and more video footage that will be hideous in another 10-15 years!

Skin MD Lotion Review and a FREE Sample for You!

Wintertime wreaks havoc on my skin. Not that I have great skin to begin with, mind you, but wintertime creates dry, scaly, rough patches and I have a hard time getting rid of them. Recently I learned about Skin MD and was eager to try their lotion as I am always up to the challenge of a new skin care product.

I was most happy to learn that Skin MD is hypoallergenic as I tend to react poorly to a lot of lotions and creams having quite sensitive skin...the perils of being a redhead! Skin MD Natural is hypoallergenic, free of fragrances, parabens and colorants. It is made with more than 90% natural ingredients and 100% food-grade ingredients that are on the FDA's "most safe" list. I wouldn't hesitate at all to use this skin care for my children as well.

Back to my dry skin; I have been putting Skin MD Natural on a very stubborn dry patch on my left elbow that will.NOT.go.away. I am happy to report that the first time I tried Skin MD, the lotion was absorbed immediately. This is a very good thing. There is nothing worse than a greasy lotion that just sort of coats your skin and sits on top, never to be absorbed creating slippery hands and skin. My dry elbow patch feels much less rough and seems to be going away! Skin MD does indeed seem to be a very good moisturizer.

Want a FREE sample for yourself?
Get a free sample by clicking the box on the left-hand side of my blog!

I Heart Boots!! And a great sale!!

Is anyone else loving all the styles of boots that are in this year? I had a pair of snazzy slouchy leather boots in college and I wore them constantly and cried when they wore out. The trend this season of boots, boots, boots has me so excited! However, I don't particularly like paying big bucks for them. 6pm.com has some great boots on sale right now starting at just $9.95!! They also have MUK LUKS for $14.95!! Hurry because we never know how long the sizes and/or prices will last.
Also check out the entire clearance section at 6pm.com for great deals on other shoes.

8th and 9th Days of Christmas

Last night was the 8th day of Christmas or 8 maids a milking. So what did we receive last night? 8 small bottles of milk in a festive bowl! Of course the kids were more than happy to have a milk break before bed.

Tonight was the 9th day of Christmas which brings 9 ladies dancing. We received 9 playful cupcakes each topped with a tiny dancing lady. How fun! and yummy! Not to mention the new and very nice cupcake holder they were brought in. How generous our Christmas angels are!!

Only three more days left. It's so exciting for the kids to see what's next. Oliver thinks he may have seen who are angels are tonight since it's very, very snowy and quite slippery they were a little slower at the doorbell ditch... or did he? :)

Daily Boutique Sites (a review)

This Christmas season I have really enjoyed shopping mostly window shopping at the high-end boutique "deals" sites. There are many out there such as www.ruelala.com, www.modnique.com, www.giltgroupe.com, www.hautelook.com, www.beyondtherack.com, www.liluxe.com, and many more. Wikipedia defines these types of sites as "online 'flash' sales, offering women's, men's and children's designer apparel and accessories, designer home goods and high-end travel destinations at discounted prices in a limited time sale format".

The sales at these sites often last for only a few days and sell out quickly. The merchandise ships when the sale event has ended. You can regularly score 50-60% off and even up to 90% off regular retail prices on clothing, shoes, purses, jewelry, cookware, etc. Plus, some of the sites offer a credit just for signing up making the deals even sweeter.

Having purchased from a few of these sites I found the contrast between two in particular, well, quite stark. I've made two purchases at Modnique and two purchases at Gilt Groupe. Both purchases from Gilt Groupe went very smoothly, shipping on time and very well packaged. I must say I am very impressed with the packaging that Gilt Groupe uses. They have "signature" boxes that are printed on the inside and it just makes you feel like you purchased something luxurious and high-end. It sounds silly to say but getting a box from Gilt Groupe in the mail feels like you're being pampered.

In contrast is Modnique. The Modnique site is really great and easy to navigate with some fun designer sales. They also offer $10 off coupon codes regularly. My first purchase with Modnique went smoothly and it arrived in the allotted time frame. I was a little disappointed with the packaging as it was not packaged like a high-end item at all. Really no big deal, it just cuts out the "fun" factor. My second purchase I have yet to see. I purchased and paid for an XOXO purse back in November and my account says "pulling merchandise". It seems like a month is a long time to "pull" merchandise before shipping. Having contacted customer service a few times, I am still no closer to knowing when my purse may arrive. Sadly, I don't know that I could recommend Modnique even though they have great prices and items.

Having used both Gilt Groupe and Modnique I would definitely recommend Gilt Groupe for the overall experience. To shop at Gilt, click HERE.

4th, 5th, 6th AND 7th Days of Christmas!

It has been a pleasure each night to receive a new surprise! On the 4th day we received a small bird feeder for 'four calling birds'. This works well for us as we have a huge backyard fulllll of doves and other assorted birds. They like to hang out on the roof line of my husband's work shed. On the 5th day we received a cookie tin with golden cookies and 5 ring pops.

The 6th day brought a dozen eggs (which are certainly welcome this time of year with all the baking) for 6 geese a laying. Tonight is the 7th day, 7 swans a swimming, and what did we get? 7 "crystal" swans swimming in goblets of blue jello. This one was kind of hard to carry into the house... :)

Handmade Couture Scarves (by my son)

My 14 year old son has been working on his Christmas presents tonight. He loves to sew and came up with this design for some scarves for the "women" in his life.

It's very haute couture don't you think!? The scarf is just 3 layered strips of fabric, in this case 2 fabrics and 1 lace. Use pinking shears to cut the strips to minimize fraying, although the fraying adds to the character of the scarf. After layering the fabric strips together, run a gathering stitch up the center and pull to desired fullness. Next, pin and sew up the center using two lines of stitching. He used a contrasting thread color to add more detail.

Gee... do I have the next Ralph Lauren on my hands?

Free Avocado!

Free avocado, so yummy!! I always joke that I would be perfectly happy sitting on a beach at the Iberostar in Playa del Carmen eating nothing but guacamole and shrimp. Actually I am not joking I am perfectly serious!

Neighbor Gifts... check!

I think I may have found the perfect gift for neighbors this year. Energy and money are always running low (what's new LOL) which makes this gift idea perfect.

Using either a store bought or homemade cake mix (don't forget the directions), place it in a cute bag (of which there are so many options!) and add this poem:

I hope you will excuse me for giving you this bag,
I did the very best I could with the precious time I had.
I should have known from the start when the eggs fell through the shopping cart.
I set aside a day to bake, the only day I didn't wake.
Then the flour fell off the shelf, not on the floor but over myself.
I tried again with no success with cake mix running down my dress.
I've given up! its yours to bake, I hope you enjoy it for goodness sake.

There you go; easy, simple and clever! Thank you craftbits.com for the great idea!!

2nd and 3rd Days of Christmas...they're back!!

Our little Christmas angels (elves?) are back. Last night we got the "Two Turtle Doves" package... chocolate turtles and dove chocolates.

Tonight was so hilarious and original, it's still making me smile! Since the 3rd day of Christmas is 3 French Hens we got.... 3 cornish game hens and french bread, so clever! They were placed atop a fun Christmas platter.

The kids are starting to get excited and trying to second guess what we will get next. Josie wants to know how they will do maids a milking and Oliver is excited to see 5 gold rings. Thank you, thank you to our special Christmas angels for making our holiday a little more merry!!

The First Day of Christmas

We woke up this morning to a beautiful surprise at our front door...a partridge in a pear tree! I have no idea who decided to give us this fun gift or even if it was placed there last night or this morning. I just love it!! And you know those pears will disappear quickly at my house. :)

Have you ever wondered what the real cost would be for the items in the song The 12 Days of Christmas? According to CBS.com, the cost of a partridge in a pear tree for 2010 is $161.99. I think I'll stick with my beautiful basket delivered by unseen friends!

Merry Christmas!!

This past week's Smith's (Kroger) deals!

This past week at Smith's Foods (a Kroger brand) was a prime example of how to combine a great store sale with coupons to get practically free groceries. As some of you probably know, they were having a coupon event to round up all coupons under $1 to $1... for example, if you had a 25¢ coupon, it was automatically rounded up to $1.

I made a few trips and got some great deals!! The first photo is of my last trip to check out another store location to see if they had some of the items that were gone in my previous trips. I got these 9 items for $2.93 or 33¢ per item. Awesome!!

Crafting Party Sponsored by BIC-Mark It

I recently had the opportunity to host a crafting party through The Hosties and sponsored by BIC Mark-It.  In the mail we received a box full of BIC Mark-It markers, both a package of 36 assortment and 2 large bags of Fandango Pink and Playful Purple.  How fun!!  The package of 36 markers is designed with purpose in mind.  It opens like a tri-fold and lays flat.  I was totally expecting to just open the package and have the markers spill out all over.  Kudos to BIC for the package design!

Since we are highly involved in 4-H and the community, we decided to make cards for servicemen and women and perhaps a local retirement home as a service project.  The BIC markers worked perfectly for the cards.  I would definitely recommend them.

Everyone joked that this card my daughter made is Santa with a trash bag... instead of Ho Ho Ho, he says Hefty Hefty Hefty!!  :D  I think it's adorable!!
All in all we got several cards done and managed to make some Christmas gift tags as well!  If you would like to learn more about The Hosties or BIC, please click here:
